Air-to-Air

Air-to-Air Checklist

Every air-to-air shoot we fly follows the same disciplined process. Great imagery comes from careful planning, clear communication, and a crew that puts safety ahead of the shot every time.

  1. We start with a defined goal: the aircraft, the look, the light, and the specific shots the client needs. A written shot list and storyboard keep everyone focused and reduce time in the air.

  2. Every pilot involved must be current, proficient, and experienced in formation flight. We confirm the camera ship and subject aircraft are airworthy, suited to the mission, and compatible in speed and handling.

  3. We check ceilings, visibility, winds, turbulence, density altitude, and sun angle well before the flight and again the day of. If conditions aren't right, we reschedule. No shot is worth flying in marginal weather.

  4. We review the planned shooting area for temporary flight restrictions (TFRs), NOTAMs, special use airspace, and any nearby air traffic. When needed, we coordinate with air traffic control or the airspace owner before the flight.

  5. We set a primary and backup frequency for air-to-air communication, identify the local air traffic or CTAF, and agree on standard calls, hand signals, and a clear “knock it off” command that stops all maneuvering immediately.

  6. Every pilot and crew member attends a full face-to-face brief covering lead and wingman roles, join-up and break-up procedures, positions, spacing, altitudes, airspeeds, and escape routes for each maneuver.

  7. We brief exactly what each aircraft does if a pilot loses sight of the other, if radios fail, or if any aircraft has a problem. Separation plans and emergency landing options are agreed on before engines start.

  8. Doors, windows, and openings are configured safely. Camera operators are secured with proper harnesses, and all loose gear is tethered or stowed. No equipment leaves the aircraft unexpectedly.

  9. We confirm aircraft owner approval, required insurance coverage, any necessary waivers or releases, and usage rights for the footage before the flight.

  10. After landing, the full crew debriefs what worked, what didn’t, and what we’d change. Then we review footage, back it up, and deliver on the timeline agreed with the client.

Safety is never negotiable. Any crew member can call “knock it off” at any time, for any reason, and the shoot stops.
